I have to take one for a job I am a temp for. It will be for the city but the test will be in the Police Dept. I have shoplifted before. Very small, but I rather not tell. Oh and I tried Marijuana once back in high school. I have a perfect clean record. What do I do or say. And what can I do to stay calm before the test? Should I say I don’t remember? HELP!!

First, tell the truth. Being found "evasive" during a polygraph will not go in your favor. Provide honest answers - there will probably be followup questions after the poly anyway. Just to explain your 'yes' and 'no' answers to their questions.
"Don't remember" is not an allowed answer during a polygraph test.

Being a former manager, having take a polygraph test some years ago and having a friend that used to give polygraph tests, I would advise you to lie.

Firstly, a polygraph test is only as accurate as the operator giving the test and many operators aren't very good. Secondly, speaking as a former manager, you're not going to get the job if you have stolen and taken drugs, regardless of your excuses. You have nothing to lose by lying.

I've heard it said that 99% of a polygraph test is intimidating the recipient into admitting things that they otherwise would never say. Don't be a chump! Lie and hope for the best.

The questions asked during a polygraph test for police officer candidates are not the same from every agency, and they are usually not the same for every person. They usually ask you questions to get an idea if you are a thief, drug user, or if you have committed any serious crimes. If there are any areas of concern on your application, they will probably ask you questions about these areas. If you have to take a polygraph test, just try to relax, and be honest. If you don't pass the polygraph test, you won't get hired.

You better suck it up and tell them because you're all ready freaking over the shoplift incident. They'll be able to tell that something's going on with you. You must be an honest person, hopefully they will see that.

Write the truth and tell the truth. Who cares if you shoplifted, but theycare if you are a liar or STILL shoplift.
