I'm developing a marketing research career and starting on my master's in marketing, so here's my advice. If possible you should have a major in either Business Administration or Marketing... but having majors in Psychology, Sociology or Statistics will help too!

You'll also need to have skills in statistics and with a statistical software program, preferably SAS or SPSS. Psychology and sociology majors typically use SPSS, which is why they might be good majors to have. It's also a good idea to get a master's degree as soon as possible - the job market is very favorable for master's people in marketing research.

When you interview for jobs, try to get into a small marketing research supplier company and not a company that doesn't actually supply research to other companies.

Depends on what college you attend. Not all colleges have a business or marketing degree. Also, some colleges have more respectable programs in one or the other. I graduated with a Communications degree with an emphasis in Marketing and Advertising, and I'm doing just fine. The Communications aspect is better for people who want to do the more creative aspects of advertising (copy writer, art director). A business degree would be better for sales and marketing (the number-crunching side of it). For Marketing research, I would find a Marketing program with strong emphasis in Statistics. Hope this makes sense and helps!

A communications degree might be more comprehensive for your goals. Yes, a business degree would also cover your marketing and research aspects, but if you are not INTERESTED in the other aspects of business, go for a degree in marketing or communications.

Having a Business degree may be more versatile if you change your mind and decide you don't want to pursue just marketing research. However, it really depends on your institution and the curriculum involved. Keep both in mind, and look at the kinds of classes you have to take, then you can decide which one looks more interesting or worthwhile.
