I can't decide what to get. Will Vista run fine with these specs?
Is Vista even stable?
Or should I get Vista, and hope the system runs fine?
Here's the basic specs:
Intel Core Duo Processor 1.66 GHZ
1 GB RAM
Integrated Graphics

I figured those were the only things that would truly affect performance. So will this laptop run Vista smoothly?
Or should I get the XP one?

I recommend that you install vista as a second operating system, I mean you will have xp and vista in the same time, becuase vista still new software so it might has some bugs.

I have Vista as a second operating system on my computer. I really liked the new graphic shiny stuff, but this reduce the performance of your machine, it really needs a powerful computer! but it will work smothly on yours, it will be better if you have more tham 1 GB RAM.
If you ask me why I wont use Vista as my first operating system I will tell you why:
1-It slows my machine even that I have a powerful one.
2- some softwares didn't work in it like Adobe reader 8, which is a bad sign that other programs might not work either.
3- Vista needs longer time to start and to shut down than XP.
4- I don't need the HIGH level of security that Vista offer, may be if am using my computer as a server I would think about it, anyway, any anti virus would do the job.
5- You don't need to install drivers, Vista will do it. But it didn't recognize my new HP printer, which doesn't have a Vista CD to install its driver, so you might need to go check the web for drivers that vista doesn't support.

The things I liked about Vista is the new Aero look and the Chess game :D
In my opinion it doesn't deserve that high price.

It is a toss up. I do not think the 1.66 processor will run it smootly. XP pro will. I would not look at Mac. Vista is a good operating system, but it needs high end resources. I run Vista and have had no problems with it, I switched from XP pro. I am running a 2.0 processor and it works fine. I would look at the specs at Microsoft and make sure that your are well above them. Otherwise, XP is the way to go. The stronger your computer is, the better Vista will be. I will not switch back to XP. Do not listen to all the Vista haters out there. Just do your home work and research the specs for Vista. Mac is not the answer.

No, this system will not run Vista smoothly. You should either get the XP system, or get a Mac. You need a very powerful system to run Vista smoothly. This opens up the Mac possibility. If you're going to be stuck with XP, you might as well get the Mac, as Mac OS X is more advanced than XP or Vista, yet you can still run Windows on a MacBook.
