They make strut compressors DO NOT TRY IT WITHOUT ONE!!! When in my youth, I tried it with a few wires and a pair of c clamp vise-grips, then I took the nut off the top with an air wrench, the wrench was ripped out of my hand, the socket went flying, I never found the nut, and I am very luck I wasn't hurt. This is one job you can't really do SAFELY without the proper tool.

Funny you should ask, I was just doing this on a Chevy Venture minivan. Alright, here's what you're gonna have to do. You'll need to compress the coil spring. This is essential, because if you don't the spring and the cap holding it on will both fly off with lethal force (yeah, it could easily kill you). What you'll need to do is go and get a spring compression tool. I recommend a "Strut Tamer". It's a pretty simple procedure, just lock the clamps on to the spring (try to get the bottom clamps closer to the bottom of the spring, and the top clamps closer to the top of it). Then, twist until the bottom separates. From there, it's up to you. (ps: Don't be looking on Yahoo! Answers for help on something like this. Any idiot could get on and give you bad advice that could end up killing you.)

Use 2 hydraulic jacks, one on the frame of the car and one under the strut.....keep the strut jacked up until you get the bolts loose then let it down. Or do it the easy way, buy a spring compressor

Can't change struts alone, so says my Dad. Purely because of the safety factor. Get some help. Really.

They are made together, so take the three bolts off, and the strut should slide out.

Use metal wire, to tie it before it is taken from its mounts. Make sure it is tied well. Also, installing the new one or another one,,, make sur it is tied as well untill it is bolted in place.
