Stay in the airport and you will be safe. Oakland itself is not a safe city

I live under 400 yards from the west perimeter of Oakland Airport. Other than traffic stops and a couple of accidents I have never seen any issue round Oakland airport. If you stay to the airport side of I880 on 98th there is nothing to worry about. I have been pestered by the pan handlers in the gas stations on Hegenberger, but only twice in nine years.

I have flown from OAK many times without incident or even seeing anything unusual, since 9-11 the Alameda County Sheriff's department is always there, they love issuing traffic citations.

As to Oakland not being dangerous, they had 148 killed last year, the map at the link below shows that they are fairly randomly distributed through the whole of Oakland. However, only three of 550 in the last 5 years have been on the airport side of I880 and those were very close to I880.

No not at all, the airport there is fine. I live in the bay area and know many people who actually prefer flying out of Oakland compared to SF. There are certain areas of Oakland which are dangerous but you will not be in them from the airport. You go straight from the airport onto the freeway no matter what direction you are going to so you will be fine.

You're perfectly safe within the confines of Oakland Airport. This includes the BART shuttle stops and parking lots outside. It's a really small airport (in comparison to SFO International), and there are federal agents all over the place.

However, the surrounding neighborhood is not safe, and I wouldn't recommend staying there overnight.

Most folks are headed for Downtown San Francisco any way. And it's obviously not dangerous if you're seeing it from the window of a taxi cab, rental car, or BART train.

Oakland airport is my favorite airport to fly in and out of. I prefer it over San Francisco Airport or San Jose Airport. It's small, and safe. I use it all the time.

You can safely take the airport-to-BART bus, and go anywhere from there. I would not walk around in the neighborhood surrounding the BART station, but why would you? Nothing there to see.

It's a small airport. Surrounding neighborhood is not anyplace you want to explore. Just leave the airport, hop directly on the freeway and get to where you need to go from there and you will be OK.

BART: There is a BART shuttle bus system that picks up passengers (have a few dollar bills on you to pay driver) and drives them and luggage to Coliseum BART terminal.

If you use BART to leave airport, need to check the schedule to see which train is running & determine how to get to your destination.

Otherwise you would need to rent a car, use a taxi or alternate public transportation or call a friend to pick you up.

You'll be completely safe at the airport, and you can safely take a shuttle/cab to Coliseum Bart (metro) where you could go to San Francisco or where ever you're planning to stay. I wouldn't wander around the coliseum bart station area though. Oakland has safe and unsafe parts, it has a high murder rate but usually this is gang on gang violence. But the airport itself is safe.

EDIT: Just so you know, Oakland's reputation has been greatly exaggerated by people who watch the local evening news programs, but those of us who actually live there know there are more safe than un-safe parts. Don't let anyone who answers here scare you.

It should be fine. The airport is near Alameda, which is a nice peaceful town. Just don't go wandering around the city of Oakland without a local to guide you.

Inside the actual airport is fine, just don't venture out. Oakland is crime infested
