I live off campus about 1 mile from my university. Is it possible to access the wireless service from my university? What kinds of adapter or the antennas would help? I have a desktop.

Possible
The ability to get a Signal that far will depend mostly on how powerful the signal strength is from the Uni.
Some Parabolic receivers can help a Little, but not always

There are actually devices made for just this type of issue, Tanzeo, Motorola, Defacto, Zinwell, many others.

These wireless CPE (customer premise equipement) are specially made radio/antenna combinations for wide range wifi. We actually have some in use covering 10 miles and have been able to connect at almost 20miles.

You will have to have something similar to have a good connection as well as have good "line of sight" from your receiver (CPE) to one of the access points at your school. If there are buildings, terrain, etc between you then you are probably out of luck without some professional assistance.

These CPE's have output ranges up to 400mw whereas you local laptop card is about 30mw. The antennas that are used are high gain directional antennas with up to 24db of gain (3 db doubles power) Most wifi cards have 2db antennas built into them.

are a couple of suppliers for these.

Hope that helps.

If you have a clear line of sight use a linksys usb antenna and point it in the direction you need. Thats probably the cheapest option.

it depents on how far the wi-fi broadcasts for and if not for a mile you would have to talk to the school to by an antenna to boost the wi-fi for 1 mile. i would suggest a linksus antenna for boosting the wi-fi.
