They perfected the cars in the 50's, the 57 Chev. was one of them, you could carry a straight and phillips screwdriver, a hammer, a set of open-end wrenches, duct tape and a coat hanger, and just fix everything yourself on the road.
Today nobody wants to open the hood (if they even know how) and if they did there is so much stuff you don't even know what your looking at.
And don't get me started on the computerized components.

As the wife of a DIY auto repair guy... I find it very frustrating. I've learned that when he says it's only going to take an hour, that means 3 hours minimum.

Oh yeah. Yesterday my knock sensor came slightly unscrewed once(just enough to throw a code) I had to remove the oil filter oil pressure sensor. And turbo feed line. Not a very big deal, but I still couldn't get my hand around it cuz parts of the suspension were in the way. I almost had my hand around it when my slipped. It and busted my hand up bad.

I think you'll find it's designed that way to keep the DIY stuff to a minimum. How else does the pro mechanic make his boat and/or lake house payment?

I'm training to become a mechanic. It's frustrating, but theres not much you can do...you'll get used to it. The other option is to pay someone else to do it, so if you don't like working on cars, then that's always an option.

Depends on what kind of car you own. I have a Ford Ranger and it is a piece of cake. Tell me you don't own a Volkswagen... do us all a a favor and drive that thing off a cliff

Yes and how about all the extra bolts that you took off but can't find a place to bolt them back into.

My husband was going to put a new alternator in his car once.. took all damn day. We had planned to go out that night and when he started the job, he believed we still would.
"Two hour job, sweetie.. tops.."
Yea right.
