Hello, the booking.com works great for me (personal opinion).
You can find good offers, reviews and ratings from guests (a great tool to decide based on other people bad or good staying experience).
I'm using it when I want to travel abroad and I didn't have any problems. The hotels and the rooms were exactly as I red and saw on site.
The maps also gives you an idea where the hotels reside.
The reservation process is easy and you don't need to pay with credit card.

take the Aeroline or Transtar Coach both are affordable ..
for hotel 3 star - Ancasa hotel (perviously known as impiana hotel) its in china town - good walking distance to all parts of KL and near puduraya also

Try www.aeroline.com.my or sg. its a vip couch from Singapore and back cost about RM 80 one way. (you can choose to stop either in KL, PJ or 1 utama)
you can choose to stay at Corus Hotel in KL (its bit expensive, Amada Hotel in PJ and Royal Bintang near to 1 Utama. the couch mention above takes you near to these hotels.
i wont say it cheap but is affordable
