I'm going to be purchasing a Sony VGN FE890 laptop, and I have to choose between getting a 120gb hdd (5400rpm) or a 160gb hdd (4200rpm). I was thinking about choosing the smallest hard drive option (60 gb) and just buying a 160gb (5400rpm)hard drive separate. It would cost $20 more to do it this way, but it might be worth it. I don't know if I can just put all of the info on the laptop that comes with it on rescue cd's and just transport it to the new hard drive (as if i were restoring the laptop) can I? Does this sound smart (so i can get the best of both worlds) , size & speed?

It does sound like a smart combination, your computer will have it's speed from the 7200rpm drive, plus you'll have a ton of storage. But you will not be able to transfer the partition drive from your internal drive to your external. It will not work the same. Sony, HP, and many other manufacturers make you create your own Restore Disks. (the partition alone is not enough to reinstall your system) But the restore disks will not work if the recovery partition is not intact on the internal hard drive. But it's still always useful to have a large external hard drive for backup purposes.

I don't know for sure if it will work for you, but what I did was to copy every thing from my laptop to the larger drive via a USB port and using my larger hard drive in a portable hard drive case then I switched the larger hard drive to my lap top. The portable hard drive cases are fairly cheap on ebay. It take a while to do this.
