We import about 20% of our oil from the anti-civilization nihlists in the Mideast. SURELY, we can make-do with 20% less imported oil? And go tell them idiots to go suck sand?

And long term, lets replace that 20% with about one or two thousand new nuclear power plants; lets build nuke plant parks in unpopulated areas of the American southwest far away from the cities.

Who's with me?

We keep trying, but the democrats stop all new oil exploration in our country at every turn. Kennedy loves wind power unless it is where he can see it, and then he puts a stop to it. No to the gulf of Mexico, No to Alaska. Hey, until a better alternative source is found we are stuck with oil.

The figure for imported oil is more like 50% and most of that portion comes from the hostile kingdom of Canada. Not sure exactly where you live, but if they build nuclear plants in the southwest, maybe your front yard would be the ideal place for the leftover products.

But, it should have been a national priority to change the driving habits of America. Baffling, they make an all-electric car that outruns a Porsche. Tesla motors points out on their website that the oil companies own the competing battery patent and that battery is not available for automobiles.

the nuke plants, while it's a good idea, won't help with our dependance on foreign oil. We power most of our current power plants with coal. the US has more coal than we could use in 100 years. The problem there is that coal is dirty and creates green house gasses.
Our real problem is our reliance on oil as a fuel for all things mobile. jets, cars, trucks etc. Also home heating oil. If we got rid of every SUV on the road and replaced them with small economy cars that might get us closer but it will never happen.
We need to look into alternative fuel vehicles like fuel cell technology.

I'm absolutely with you, but I differ on the desirability of "thousands of nuke plants", as I think photovoltaics and neighborhood fuel-cells are less toxic.

Fuel cells and biodiesel for motor transport would be fabulous, and renewable.

Bush blew it for me on Sept 12, 2001 when he told us to "just keep shopping" rather than find a new energy paradigm, then went to war over the old one within a year and a half.
