After putting out $1400 for the fridge, I don't even let the kids use magnets. Instead we put up a sheet of Dry Erase film on a wall near the back door and we have a giant "wipe it board" that looks pretty cool and damages nothing.

I used to(on the side) before switching to stainless steel. It works great and as long as you don't get carried away, it don't look messy.
