This swollen eye problem comes up quite often on the rat-only forums, and in all the cases so far, it has not been good.

Tumor behind the eye, abscess behind the eye, SDA, or Sendai, and Mycoplasmosis infection, have all resulted in swollen eyes affecting one or both eyes.

Check each of these out at RatGuide http://ratguide.com/.

Your best option at this time is have a vet diagnose the problem. I do have holistic advice, that I would love to share with you, but I couldn't possibly give out this advice publicly until I know what your rat's problem is. It might even be contagious as in SDA and your other rat will soon start showing the symptoms.

Or, you many join my group Holistarat where you may discuss your options with the vet techs, vet, lab techs, and holistic experts.

I'm sorry but if you can't afford to take your rat to the vet, then perhaps you shouldn't have got it in the first place, vets are expensive and if you love your pet that much it wouldn't matter what it cost you at the vet to make it well again

See if there is a small animal vet in your area. They specialize in smaller animals and it doesn't cost as much (at least it didn't for me). I took all 3 of my rats to the vet and it cost $25.00 plus medicine.

If your lucky one of the rat experts will see your posting. Dani and Spazrats have helped me by reading other peoples questions.

I don't know how old he is but I'm afraid I would take him to the vet. It could be a growth because they are prone to them. Might not be cancerous but you don't want the pressure popping his wee eye out.
