The way I see it, you shouldn't treat people with respect if they show you none themselves. You can't live your life worrying about being nice to people that obviously don't care about being nice to you.
That's not to say that you should go around being snotty with everyone. Treat others as you want to be treated ... when you first meet them. Once you get to know them, treat them as they treat you. Remember that every individual is different, and you might scare off a potential friend if you don't give everyone a chance, first.
That's also not to say that you should try to start problems with people that you don't like. Ignore them if you can, but stand up for yourself if they start something with you. You're not their punching bag. Don't let them treat you like one, physically, mentally, or emotionally.
I hope this has helped you. Good luck with everything.

I know how you feel. I go out of my way to be pleasant with people and I've found that some people view that as an open invitation to act like they were raised by wolves. Some people just have a chip on their shoulder and when they see someone smiling it insults them. These are miserable people who don't deserve the time of day. Just ignore them and walk away. I don't think treating them the same way is the answer, although I certainly understand the tempation and will admit to snapping once and awhile. Try not to let them poison you with their bitterness.

You know the old saying, two wrongs don't make a right. You should continue to treat people well. One of two things is going on. You are either hanging out with ALL the wrong people (because they are mean and disrespectful without any provocation) OR you give off a vibe that you are unaware of. So, re-examine how you are acting, or ask someone you trust to be honest with you how you come across to others. It may be time to ditch your crowd?

While it might sound like a good idea and might even feel good to show others how it feels, disrespecting others isn't really the best way to go about it. If these people aren't treating you the way you should be treated, stay away from them for awhile. If they ask a favor, say "I'm sorry, but I can't." Be polite about it, but deny them. Once they see that you aren't allowing yourself to be walked on anymore, they will stop. They are the ones that will have to realize their own behavior is affecting their friendships. If they are truely your friends, they will realize thier mistakes and make good on them. Good luck!

that saying ..do unto others what you will like to be done to you... In this case if you treat them nice and they do not show you respect, then what you need to do is search for better friends...also analyze what is going on? why are they treating you like this? instead of changing who you are...ask those that are treating you like this to explain why that is... but don't change your attitude because others don't have respect for others. Keep your nice attitude even if others do not reciprocate it.... trust me sometimes they will feel even "lower" by getting treated with much respect. Can show them how ignorant some people can be...

I go through the same thing you do, ever since I was a little kid...I barely had any friends because people would treat me like crap and for no reason.
When I got older I started treating people how they treated me, now no one messes with me because they are afraid of me.
Make them become scared of you, then they won't mess with you.
