It's funny how everyone mentions the '85 Bears, but when you stack the numbers, they dont compare

The Super Bowl Champion with the best rushing defense was the 2000 Ravens, they only gave up 60.6 yards per game on the ground. Second place is actually the 99 Rams at 74.3 ypg, third is the 92 Cowboys at 77.7 ypg. The 1985 Bears place 6th at 82.4 ypg

The Super Bowl Champion with the best passing defense was the 1973 Miami Dolphins. They only allowed 114.6 ypg passing. The 1985 Bears are 20th! They allowed 206.2 ypg passing.

Points allowed - 2000 Ravens are first again at 10.3 ppg, followed by the 1973 Dolphins at 10.7 ppg. The 1985 Bears are 8th at 12.4 ppg

As for total defense, the top prize would go to the '74 Steelers with 248.6 ypg, followed by the '72 Dolphins at 255.5 ypg and the '73 Dolphins at 256.8. The 1985 Bears are 13th at 288.6 ypg.

Before you make the argument about the different eras of football, take into account that the 2005 Steelers, 96 Packers, 90 Giants, 2002 Buccaneers, 92 Cowboys and 2000 Ravens are all ahead of the 1985 Bears.

The bottom of the list, just in case you are interested
Total Defense
87 Redskins 363 ypg
2001 Pats 349.1 ypg

Rushing defense
2006 Colts 173 ypg
Passing defense
1987 Redskins 251.1 ypg
scoring defense
2006 Colts 22.5 ppg
1983 Raiders 21.1 ppg
1968 Jets 20.0 ppg

Rules change every year.

The 2000 Ravens are pussycats compared to the 1976 Steelers but if the 1978 Steelers had to play in 2000 every play would be 15 yard defensive penalty.

From the 1966 Packers to the 2004 Patriots (With highlights for the Dolphins, Giants, Redskins, 49ers, Cowboys ['70s and '90s], Broncos, etc.)

If you mean for that 1 game? It is hard to beat the '85 Bears. They gave up just 10 points. Of those ten 3 came because the opening kickoff was fumbled deep in their own territory. The 7 was scored by a late TD by back up QB Steve Grogan when the Bears led by 43 points.

F**k the Steelers' D, f**k the Ravens' D, F**k all of the Super Bowl winning teams except for the Bears they literally dismantled the Pats, the Bears got the record for least rushing yards permitted with 6!!!! plus the score was 46-10 that was just a slaughter.

Super Bowl 9; Steelers vs Vikings

Pittsburgh’s defense held Minnesota to only 119 yards of total offense, including a Super Bowl record low of 17 yards rushing.

only Viking score was a blocked punt.

There's more to defense than sacks.

The '85 Bears and 2000 Ravens immediately come to mind when talking about the best defense in Super Bowl history, but my preference is the Bears because I was rooting for the Giants as the lesser of two evils when they played the Ravens that year.

Well what is truly the best D, and I'm guessing you mean ONE game. I mean the most sacks? Come on they weren't an offical Stat until the 80's so we CAN'T use that stat. I'd say the least yards allowed in the game is the BEST Defense.

2000 Ravens broke almost every record that year but i have to give credit to 85 bears, 80's steel curtain and the 2001 Bucs

Hands down, the 85 bears had the nastiest defense to ever have stepped foot on the field.
