what could be the problem? I was doing some work on my pc and saving data from the internet, i was already going on about an hour and the half and suddenly the screen just went blank and its light flickered. I tried switching it off and then switching on again but nothing appeared on the screen and the light still flickered.

p/s: The monitor is kinda old, haven't been used for some time and only recently we started to used it again.

I'd say it was time for a new monitor. Try looking on the side of the road on trash day (yes, both of my monitors are from that method), or try a local version of FreeCycle - in Yahoo Groups. Many people are upgrading to flat screens, so old tube monitors are on the way out.
Otherwise, check your connections. Make sure all the cables are plugged in correctly, and screwed down. If you are comfy with inside the PC, ensure your video card is plugged in well. Also, try the monitor on a known-good computer (if you have 2) to make sure it's not a video card problem. Good luck!

Sounds like the electrical connections are shorting out. Used monitors are really cheap these days. Check on http://craigslist.org

Chances are you can even find someone who is giving a monitor away for free. All you have to do is go pick it up.

If this is an LCD montitor it could be the power inverter or the backlight. If you're handy with electronics you can get a kit and fix this yourself for around $20. If it's a CRT, trash it and get an LCD, they are fairly inexpensive these days.
