Look at you power options in control panel. The default setup for running on batteries shuts down your notebook after so many minuts of inactivity. It could also be set to shutdown when the battery level becomes low. Check the battery icon on the taskbar and see if the shutdown occurs when battery is low. If the battery is draining within 30 minutes you may need a new one.

When a computer shuts down unexpectly like that there can be a few factors. some of the most common are outlined below.
1. most common: Over heating. Be sure to keep your system well ventilated. Since its a laptop you may want to use a chillpad, which can be bought at any computer store.. which is something you set your laptop on and adds extra fans to it. running cost anywhere between 15-30 bucks.
2. It could be a power adapter as well, even though the battery is holding a charge, it may not be getting the charge source it needs. if your adapter starts to go it will effect how well your battery gets charged. running costs of laptop batteries varys depending on model. anywhere between 100-200+ bucks. (to test your power adapter, remove the battery from your system.. and only use the power adapter... if your system does not power on.. you have a bad adapter. if it stays on for a bit then dies... it could be goin bad or overheating.
3. Virus. There are certain virsus that can cause system shut down. the most popular one back a few years ago was the Sasser virus.. which would abruptly shut down your system. might want to give your system a good scrub down.
Hope these points have helped you.

If it's the battery, you should be getting a low battery alarm.
If you aren't using it, then the power saving settings might be putting it into hibernate after 30 minutes.
Otherwise, there may be some heat build-up. First, make sure the vents are not blocked, and it isn't sitting on the bed or something soft. Notebooks are designed to operate with their vent ports clear, so it is best to keep it on a hard surface. You can also buy a can of compressed air to blast the vent ports clear of dust, as dust inhibits air flow.

The most likely reason would be overheating. They're set up to shutdown when it reaches a certain temperature to prevent them from frying. Clean out the dust and make sure when you use it, the vents are free. It's best to use on a flat surface, and not something like a bed or lap.
If it's not overheating, then it could be a spyware or virus issue.
Lastly, though unlikely with a laptop, it can be a power issue. If you're plugged in, then it doesn't matter whether your battery is charged or not, just make sure the power brick you're using is the properly rated one.

It may be overheating.
Make sure all the vents are free of dust and make sure you are using it on a hard surface, a soft surface such as a tablecloth blanket and even "your lap" can block the air-vents causing your computer to overheat...
If you can see visible dirt/dust/lint (or whatever) in the vents than you should either bring your laptop in to be cleaned or if your confident then you could buy some compressed air cans and blow out all the dust yourself.

what does your laptop do before shutting down? If it just turns off completely without any warnings then it sounds like a hardware issue. If it plugged in then i doubt you have a battery issue .... take out the battery and leave the cord in and see if it still resets. Sounds like you might have a motherboard issue .... time to shop for repair man!

It sounds love that's overheating. There are some issues you may attempt: (a million) Use a can of airborne dirt and dust remover spray and dislodge any airborne dirt and dust that could have geared up-up on your exhaust fan. Spray into the vents the place the fan expels the nice and comfortable air. (2) in the experience that your battery is nice, it is going to final you longer than half-hour. attempt doing those comparable events that usually close down the laptop in approximately half-hour *devoid of* utilising the potential plug. in specific circumstances, plugs can bypass undesirable. manufacturers like AlienWare have actual shipped notebooks with form-new plugs that overheat the laptop.

Turn your lap top upsidedown while UNPLUGGED...locate the fan..unscrew the screws and get a can of air...your CPU is over heating and the vents need to be cleaned. I have the same lap top with the same problem. This fixed it..good luck.
