can a laptop computer be safely run on a UPS system made for desktops?

my laptop's battery has lost its ability to retain energy, and quickly discharges within mere 5-10 minutes. will it be safe to run it on my APC 500 VA UPS, since it can theoretically provide about 1 hour worth of running time to my laptop

Better to buy new battery for your laptop, but using your UPS is OK. The 500VA is maximum rating, most desktop use only around 300W and for laptop is less than this. Ideally that won't last long as it degrades UPS upon using. New battery won't cost much with comfortability, unless you want to bring your UPS with you all the time... just joking but true.
