My son is four months old and has been constipated for over a week now. He does poop but they are big turd poops (like his older 16mo sister passes) He is on Soy because he had bad gas on the similac formula. He sleeps through the night when his gas/constipation doesn't wake him up.
I've read a little on other questions about what to do. We've tried prunes and giving him a little extra water, which doesn't seem to help. Some previous answers suggested apples (which I'm trying now), brown sugar water, caro syrup (which I heard was bad for babies this young??) and other types of formula.
Any tried and tested methods out there? Should I change his formula again?(He gets gas from powder so we have to buy it in a liquid form, and even then he gets gas if we switch from ready to feed to concentrate!!) I'd love to hear from other moms who have/had babies like this cause although he's my four, he's my first with all these tummy problems and he's driving us crazy!

He is not on cereal yet, because his doctor told me he weighs too much (He's 17 lbs now)

We tried Karo and brown sugar and neither one worked very well. Gonna try the pear juice tomorrow and the next and see how it goes

My Ali had the same problem on Enfamil Prosobee (soy version) I contacted her pediatrician and he suggested Pear Juice. Start out with 2 oz of pear juice and 2 ounces of water . She took these 4 oz during a 24 hour period and it helped some. We increased the pear juice b/c her poops were still kinda hard. So, the doctor said we could increase the pear juice and water to 4oz each (8 ounces total). Just make you are diluting the pear juice. Its a little strong for a 4 mths tummy.

I mixed the pear juice in her formula bottle because she would not take the pear juice and water by itself. She is 6 months old and I still do the pear juice. IF i forget and do not give her enough, her hard stools come back.

Soy formula is notorious for making babies constipated. But, I was so happy to get Ali off of the Nutramigen ($$$Formula) that a little pear/water juice added to her routine is fine with this mama!
PS: Doctor also said if this did not clear it up to use a baby stool softener (made especially for infants :baby colace, I think) Check with your pharmacist if you need the stool softener.
Good luck!

Try giving him one ounce of juice (prune, apple, cherry, pear, or grape) once a day. If that doesn't cut it, go to twice a day. You can go as high as one ounce for every month of his age, up to twice a day. Don't do brown sugar water or caro syrup - there's no medical evidence to prove it works. BTW - applesauce can make the constipation worse - it's part of the BRAT diet used to treat diarrhea. Prune baby food might not be helping either because his body may not be ready for it yet.
As for the gas - there's a product sold in the pharmacy called Mylicon. Give one dropper up to three times a day with feedings.
Try not to change his formula yet - you don't want to confuse his little tummy any more than it is already. Do that as an absolute last resort.

Best Constipation Cures

I think I am the one that answered your post last time. Like I mentioned before we use Dark Karo Syrup 1tsp for 8oz bottle once a day....that was suggested by our pedi doc because everything else we tried wouldn't work. Our son is three days shy of being five months old. He has been on the syrup since he was a month old. We have experimented here and there by not giving him the syrup for a day or two and we revert back to the original problem-major constipation, sleepless nights, and miserable days. But like I said above it's only given to him once a day usually in the morning and 9 times out of 10 he has a bowel movement with and hour and a half. That one time where he doesn't have one it's usually later on in the day. Since giving him the syrup he bowel movements are consitant-peanut butter like and no longer rock solid balls. He's on Similac Isomil Advance Soy Formula.

Is the formula he's on right now with iron? You might want to try a low iron or one without, iron can cause constipation in babies this little.

Never, ever, ever put food in a baby's bottle!

No...don't give them sugar in their water...
DON'T give him water either, until he is closer to a year old. It fills him up, and he won't drink as much nutritious formula.

1. Have you recently started putting rice in his formula? Cut back on it a little.

2. Put stage 1 babyfood PEARS in with his formula....try a tablespoon for every 3 oz prepared formula.

3. Don't Change his formula again. That could be causing the problem.

4. Try using the dr. brown's bottles....and make sure you burp your baby after every 2 oz of formula he drinks.

(my daughter used similac advance milk-based with iron, and never had problems)

If you are putting apple juice in every bottle how much are you putting in it. It should least be a half of a ounce until he can get regular
