Why should Native Americans block English Only Laws when the law's purpose is to keep multi-language government printing expense from going out of control and helping new immigrants succeed as Americans (rather than leeching off us and going home)? How about we instead have laws called English and Native Languages Only, with provision that we don't have to print DMV tests in Choctaw, Cherokee, etc. That way no one is threatened, heritage is preserved, and no one is obstructing. Opinions?

I'm not saying it wasn't a crime that happened to Native Americans. On the contrary, I'm saying native languages should be elevated to the same legal status as English without printing everything in every language.

The true Native and official languages of this country are not English. English is the language of the oppressors. Why make the language of oppressors official? Native languages were disrupted severely by this population. This occurred primarily during the boarding school period when Native children were kidnapped and forced to attend White Christian boarding schools. If they were caught speaking their language they would be beat. Sometimes they would get their tongue pierced or their fingertips cut off. So why are we trying again to make Natives speak English? This is proof of continued oppression! Native people should be able to speak there own language as the official language, this is their land.

I am a Native woman. I think to make the English language official is preposterous and another form of institutionalized racism!!!!!

We don't need an official language. America has been operating fine without one. Why change what is working?
Yes, some people may feel inconvenience in being culturally sensitive but this is a minor inconvenience compared to continued oppression.

I sort of consider the object. regularly all people is picking those names because of the fact they are "unique" (their words, no longer mine! LOL) or they only like the sound. i think of while you are going to %. a recognition like that, that stands proud to 3 extent, there had greater effective be a profound reason for it. I additionally see no element in utilising a recognition like that if there is not any dating between me and the call. working example, I named my canines Brooklyn and Annapolis. Brooklyn's my abode city, Annapolis is the place my husband went to varsity. See? there's a dating there. while human beings call their daughters Brooklyn because of the fact "like, that's an extremely attractive call? and prefer, i'm able to call her Brooke?" yet there is not any reason for it, it form of feels incredibly flimsy, a shoddy determination. i do no longer think of we are able to get via each thing in this international devoid of offending somebody or yet another, regardless of the indisputable fact that. If utilising those names is objectionable to the close by human beings, they are not the only ones who merchandise to convey call options. all people is offended by way of a few thing. i might by no skill supply my new child a cheesy call like Dakota or Savannah or Cheyenne...yet no longer offending a tribe may well be an extremely small portion of the reason. nonetheless, you strengthen some exciting factors. thank you for bringing it up! edit: are not Christopher and Christine in certainty Christ with suffixes on them? LOL

That is the spoils of war... We did them a favor by allowing them to live! If they don't like it, how about they consult the rest of the world. Nobody criticizes the Mongol Empire for ripping the world a new one... Nor do they fault the Spanish/French/English/Dutch for the downfall of Native Americans. It is only the fault of the United States, and namely, white guys named George, Thomas, Benjamin, Theodore, and all those other slave loving conquistadores that have exploited any Native of Any Land in Any part of the globe...

As someone with ties to First Nations, and children with vague NA ancestry, I have to disagree.

We, as the white man, took their lands and swindled them out of their homes and culture. Unfortunately, many Natives were slaughtered mercilessly by invading whites. If this sort of thing happened today, it'd be all over the news as ethnic cleansing and genocide.
