Professional hockey games last for 3 periods that are 20 minutes long with stop time, where the clock stops when the play is blown dead by the referees whistle. They also have intermissions at the end of period 1 and period 2, which are around 15 minutes or so in length. Professional hockey games go for about 2 1/2 hours standard. However, if a game is tied at the end of the third period, then they play a 5 minute, sudden death overtime period, where is one team scores in that 5 minute span, then the game is over. If the game is still tied after 5 minutes of overtime, they play a 3-person shootout, where each team selects three shooters to go one-on-one with the opposing goaltender. If the shootout score is tied after each team has used up their three shooters, then they do sudden death shootout rounds, where each team sends in one shooter until the game ends with one team having more goals in the shootout than the other. The team that wins a shootout is rewarded with one goal on the scoreboard and one shot on the shot clock, which records the total number of shots that each team gets on net in the game. Games that go to overtime or the shootout usually are only about 3 hours long. Therefore, professional hockey games go for anywhere between 2 1/2 and 3 hours.

A pro hockey game lasts 3 hours. There are 3 periods of 20 minutes in length with intermissions in between periods 1 & 2. It may last a little longer depending on if the game goes to OT or a shoot-out.

Three periods of 20 minutes each, with a 15 minute 30 second intermission between each period. If tied at the end of three periods, there is a 1 minute intermission followed by one sudden-death overtime period of 5 minutes. The playing time is "stop time" (like football and basketball, as opposed to running time like soccer). If no one scores in OT, then there is a short wait for a dry cut partial resurfacing of the ice, followed by a shootout, which is untimed.

For overall time from opening face-off through the end of the 3rd period, a normal game will last around 2 1/2 hours or maybe a little longer.

How Long was a chinaman
Howie Long played football for the Raiders.
An NHL game has 60 minutes of scheduled time during the regular season and an additional 5 minutes of O/T if the score is tied after 60 minutes.
Playoff games have a 60 minute time limit and go into sudden death (first goal scored wins) if the teams are tied after regulation time. Some games have gone quite long in the playoffs lasting longer in O/T than they did in regulation.

Regulation play for a regular season game is 60 minutes long. Three 20 minute periods. 5 minutes for 1 overtime period if necessary(tie game). Playoff hockey is the same except that overtime periods are 20 minutes in length and more periods added until game is decided.(sudden death).

Average about 2 to 2 1/2 hours
That should get you in the ballpark
15 minute warm-up
60 minutes clock time
15 minutes resurface between each period
12 minutes TV timeouts
Play stoppages, injuries, OT, shootouts and the dog and pony shows that go on in between periods really can't be estimated, but most games run 120 to 150 minutes

Three 20 minute periods. If needed, overtime consists of one 5 minute "sudden death" period. If the game is still tied, then there is a shootout to delclare victory.

In the playoffs, the overtime period(s) are also sudden death, but are played in 20 minute periods as played in the normal game.
