Hi I have an acer laptop and all that comes up on screen is that there is no bootable device. It tells me to use up or down arrow keys to change option - they don't work and says press ENTER to select an option which also doesn't work. Does this mean that this laptop is ready for the laptop graveyard?

you cannot restore it at all without the cd. Face the facts, your dad will find out either way because once you get a restore cd it will wipe everything off of the hard drive. So any files and programs that he had on the laptop will be gone.

Click your start button, then click run, type in msconfig press ok click BOOT.INI folder check safe boot then press ok. click the restart button when it restarts follow the instructions, this will help lead you to the error (what needs to be erased) if you get no instructions it will take you tight back to the folders in which you choose BOOT.INI click it again then uncheck the safe box and restart your computer. You have now rebooted your computer.

to clean it up. go into safe mode and dont worry. make sure you do safe mode with networking. now go into the internet and find the "smitfraudfix" then download it. Run it in its consecutive order from number 1 going down. then you should be okay
