I think it's a very pretty name, but when I imagine the type of girl named Salome, I imagine someone that could be considered a school weirdo. I see:

a girl with flowing blonde hair wearing layered peasant skirts, drawing unicorns on herself, and swirling around in the corner with headphones on listening to Stevie Nicks.

If you want a creative daughter, I say go for it. But it lends itself to hippiness very easily.

Salome is indeed a Biblical name. In fact, there are two women named Salome appearing in the New Testament. One of the women was the wife of Zebedee and the mother of Apostles James and John. She was also present at the sepulcher on the morning of the Resurrection.

The other Salome, and probably the more well-known of the two women, was the daughter of Herodias, wife of King Herod. Salome danced at Herod's birthday party and Herod was so pleased with the beautiful Salome's dancing that he offered to give her a gift, anything she wanted was to be hers. At her mother's suggestion (Heriodias didn't like John because he had condemned her marriage to Herod as adulterous), Salome asked for the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. Since Herod had promised her anything, he complied.

I have always thought the name was pretty but considering the connotations the name carries (like the name Jezebel, for instance) I wouldn't name my child Salome.

Also, judging from some of the answers, if people weren't familiar with the Biblical aspect of the name, she would most certainly be called "salami" by a bunch of mean little kids.

At first I thought you wrote "Shalome" which reminds me of "Shalom". It's a well known word for hello so the name sounds very friendly. I like Salome. But then again I am a big fan of original rare names:)
