Windows is offering validated customers a free upgrade to Windows Vista. I'm wondering if I should upgrade to the new platform? I've heard there can be problems if your PC doesn't have the necessary specs. My PC has a 1.7 ghz hard drive (Pentium M), 1 gb of ram, and 80 gb of storage. Is that enough for me to upgrade? Also, will my current programs work with Vista? Or will those have to be upgraded as well? Thanks!

I truly do not know as I am in the same boat. I just got my free upgrade in the mail which is for the premium vista, 32 bit and I only have 512 of RAM and a 200 GB hard drive but according to them, I qualified for the Premium Vista. My computer is a brand new HP Pavilion slimline which runs now like a champ and I don't want to do anything to change that. With that being said, Vista is supposedly better in the Security Department and there is a lot of eye candy to be seen and enjoyed. If they sent you the free copy, I guess it should work if you follow the directions. You go first. Try it out. I'm gonna wait though. I have it and when I know for sure the coast is clear, I'll do a download. I'm not much help to you but good luck.

I recommend that you install vista as a second operating system, I mean you will have xp and vista in the same time, becuase vista still new software so it might has some bugs.

I have Vista as a second operating system on my computer. I really liked the new graphic shiny stuff, but this reduce the performance of your machine, it really needs a powerful computer! but it will work smothly on yours, it will be better if you have more tham 1 GB RAM.
If you ask me why I wont use Vista as my first operating system I will tell you why:
1-It slows my machine even that I have a powerful one.
2- some softwares didn't work in it like Adobe reader 8, which is a bad sign that other programs might not work either.
3- Vista needs longer time to start and to shut down than XP.
4- I don't need the HIGH level of security that Vista offer, may be if am using my computer as a server I would think about it, anyway, any anti virus would do the job.
5- You don't need to install drivers, Vista will do it. But it didn't recognize my new HP printer, which doesn't have a Vista CD to install its driver, so you might need to go check the web for drivers that vista doesn't support.

The things I liked about Vista is the new Aero look and the Chess game :D
In my opinion it doesn't deserve that high price.

Well, technically you meet the spec's required to run Vista. Though they are at the low end of the spectrum.

But, I would wait a few more months to upgrade because there are still many issues with this OS.

It is common for a new release to have bugs. I really consider the public release of an OS to be nothing more than a large-scale beta test.

You'll be able to run Vista, but a lot of your programs that you run on Windows XP just don't run on Vista. I've got Vista on a separate hard drive and I don't use it at this time. I've heard Microsoft may have a SP-3 up date for XP, but I'm not sure about that.
