If they are having a hard time at work??

I try to find out what at work is making them glum - we try to make a game of the boring stuff (like setting passwords for callers to funny stuff, or having a word of the day which we have to get into conversations).

Give him moral support by listening to his troubles or problems. If possible help him to find out solutions. Let him know you are always ready to help in any way you can. Offer your time & company for a relaxing coffee / chat sessions, a leisurely stroll, a latest film, share a TV or video evening together, a chess game...

Make sure you give them time so when they want to talk you can listen. As long as they know they have your support this will cheer them up.
