I don't think you can buy dirty needles, so sterile is the only way to go.

*LoL* Because I'm sure whoever is watching or even doing the injection would flip out and make a scene about how sterile the needle is but I totally agree with you....I highly doubt the inmate cares.

It's the correct medical procedure--that's all. hospitals and prisons have there rules.

According to wikipedia it's because the inmate may receive a stay of execution after the needle is inserted. This has actually happened.

It is a matter of ethics on one hand and law and procedures on the other. Like one person has answered, there is a possibility to revert the decision.
Also there is a responsibility to keep the person hale and healthy until the last breath. You might want to know that a person kept in jail and about to be hanged will not be executed if the person is sick, like fever etc. They can execute only when the person has recovered from that sickness.

I would have to say they do this in the event that the execution is called off and the immate gets another chance at life. Some executions are called off at the last moment and there has been cases where the immate is brought back to life.

In the off chance he survives the injection, has to do it again and they can't fit him in for months. He might die of an infection if that's the case.
