how many would i need to lift me off the ground?

It would depend on your weight, plus the birds thrust ratio (which is probably less than a quarter pound for a pigeon) Plus it would depend on whether or not you could get the birds to work together.
Your best bet is to use hummingbirds, or something similar, that way you can have better maneuverability...

Anyway, if a pidgeon can lift a quarter pound, and you weigh 200 pounds, you would need 800 pidgeons to get off the ground, this assumes healthy, cooperative pidgeons...

Keep in mind, 800 pidgeons will make a lot of pidgeon crap, and you will be hanging from a string directly under them.... Heh :)

There are alot of varibales to consider in this question so I will assumed you are 150 pounds and it is a sunny day with an updraft and you arent trying to go very far.

Ostriches and Emu- They dont fly. so...none.

Pterodactyl- probably about 1

Hawks and eagles- They can probably lift a good 2 pounds so about 75 birds.

Buzzards- Probably about 4 pounds per bird so I would say you would need at least 38 birds

Song birds- Probably about 1 pound each if they have been working out so about 150 of them

Finches and other small birds- .5 or less so you would need at least 300 of them to carry you.

As a practical problem, it probably couldn't be done. You have to realize part of the reason birds can fly is they are very light. Their actual upward thrust is probably not that much. Plus, you'd have a bunch of panicked birds, not pulling in the same direction, crashing into each other, twisting lines. Not to mention the ethical ramifications.

In the first place the birds would have one he*l of a time taking off. they would all have to leave the ground at exactly the same time , and you would have to use roller skates to not pull them down as they gained altitude. I don't think you could use enough birds to get you off the ground.

You have way too much time on your hands to come up with a question like this. Hahaha.
If you are serious about this, please don't do it. Even if you figure out the answer to your question it is cruel to mame all of the birds that it would take to do this. And you will mame them by trying, so just don't do it PLEASE.
It would just be a lot easier to go hang gliding. That way you are only taking a chance with your own life.

Don't know but here's how to work it out:

A bird's excess lifting power will be on average about 1% of it's body weight. Of course it depends on the bird, but that's ana average.

Crows weigh about a pound. So each crow lifts 0.01 pounds of you. 1400 crows will lift each stone of yours. If you weigh 10 stone, that's 14,000 crows. There you go.

Have you ever tried to walk with your feet tied up or jump in the air.....you could'nt do it. you'll need to find your balance and in that case no birds would lift you off the ground.

I'd suggest you not try it with hummingbirds. Actually, if you tried it with *any* bird species, some 'animal rights' movement or other would probably have you thrown in jail.
