Very basically there is an antenna in the computer (in laptops it is hidden, in traditional computers you can get one that connects through a USB port) that reads signals from a router. Most people that install a router include a password so that strangers can't access their internet connection without permission. You can name the connection anything you like. Public places (such as internet cafes) allow you to connect without a password and the name of the connection would be pretty obvious (such as Wendy's). When you are in an area with a router, you bring up your connection (usually located on your toolbar on your desktop) and choose the appropriate signal. If you have never connected there before you may be asked for a password.

Identify theft is when someone uses your personal information for criminal reasons. For example by having your Social Security (or Social Insurance) number, they can then request a birth certificate, drivers licence, credit card, etc. Once they have this information, they can apply for credit cards and you won't even know it (sometimes you get the bills in the mail but sometimes you don't even get the bills becuase they have used phony addresses) - in this case your credit rating would be affected big time which you wouldn't know about until you try to buy something with your credit card.

Most times this is done when someone gets into your computer without your permission. There are many ways to do this. Some companies phish which means they will send you a very authentic looking e-mail that looks like it is from your bank asking for your password and account information (they give very believable reasons for wanting this information). NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE INCLUDING YOUR BANK.

Another way of getting into your computer is by sending admail to you via pop-up screens. When you click on OK, or Cancel or sometimes even on the X in the top right corner, it activates a program that attaches a virus to your computer which will search your cookies, computer files, etc. for account information and passwords.

As for the air conditioners - who knows...

Have a great day.

ID theft from Wi-Fi connection can occur either the network is not secured and hacker intercepts unencrypted ID information on the air, or the hacker is a super A+ math student and in fact decrypted encoded WEP information on the air.

I was computer admin assistant back the day when I was a high school student. privy to some peeve talks teachers exchanged, the moneys are budgeted by some paper-pushing punks on the school board to be used ONLY as the tabled objective allow; those punks have no idea what is needed in the field and bearacracy rears its ugly head here.

Identity theft happens by giving info on how it works. Schools often get computers through corporate donations and grant programs and on some occassions deep discounts that they may have room for in the budget. Airconditioning never connected anybody to the world. Which would you pick?
