Why are North and South Dakota two states? Why do they not just become one big Dakota

I believe it was to keep representation as equal as possible. There are other states that were made into 2 for the same reason

For the very same reason that North Carolina and South Carolina dont. Why would you want them to become one big Dakota?

Same reason Virginia and West Virginia don't become big virginia - North and South Carolina won't become big Carolina. We were settled by people of different cultural backgrounds. We have a different geographical make-up. We have developed our own state laws and infrastructure to meet our unique economical and cultural needs. We have different resources and products to offer the country. Blending all of these factors would be costly and inefficient. Besides who wants to redesign the american flag - 50 is a good number. :)

They get more representation in the senate being 2 states.

You could have the same arguement for the Carolinas
