The emergency vets will be more expensive - they really are just for emergencies. There are some other options. Some vets have hours on weekends (mainly Saturdays). In particular, most PetSmarts have vet clinics attached. They might have different hours than most vets. Some vets might even have evening hours. It's important to call around. You can also call a rescue organization and see if they can help. Explain that you will take the cat in after it's checkup (and that you'll pay the costs). They might be able to help you out. At the very least, they'll be familiar with area vets who might be able to lend a hand. Finally, do you have a friend, neighbor, etc. who can run the cat to the vet? In the meantime, if the cat is healthy, you can let it live in your garage or basement. You'll want to check it for fleas before you let it in your house. If you have other cats, then you should wait until it sees a vet to let it in. You can check for fleas by running a flea comb through it's fur. If little black flecks come out, you put them on a white paper towel and moisten it with water. If it turns red or pink - you have fleas. You must get flea medication from the vet - over the counter treatments have been known to kill animals.
