Okay, i'm a football player, and i'm not some rugby player saying pads are for sissies, but why should football players wear pads? i mean the helmets probably increase the risk of injury to the person they're hitting if you make a direct hit with the facemask somewhere. I mean rugby can be played w/o pads and it's just as physical a game. and maybe we could just wear visors to protect someone's eyes from being poked out or something and that would be it. I mean we wear helmets to protect from shoulder pads and shoulder pads to protect from helmets?

okay so a lot of people are saying i've never played football or anything. I do. I play Middle linebacker for my school team. I'm not trying to be hard. i just remember one of my teammates losing feeling in one of his arms and not being able to grip anything because a facemask hit his arm, and to some degree a lot of injuries could be avoided without pads.

If you really are a football player you would definately know the reason why.
Actually the increased risk of injury with a helment goes to the person whom tackles with his helmet straight into the shoulder pads. Causes severe and sometimes deadly injuries to the spine and neck.
There are knee pads, hip pads, thigh pads, a butt pad, shoulder pads, helmet, some will wear rib protectors, and others will wear full body suits with padding all over.
I play football and in my senior year in high school we had two guys who played rugby come on to the team. We figured they would be instant starters and tough SOB's, but wow, were we wrong. We lit them up all over the field. The whole concept of the game is completely different. After two practices they never showed up again. They even told us that our game is very painful, requiring lots of skills, heart, and brains.
Don't compar Rugby with American football. They are way different in many many aspects.

Okay we are going to set up a test, we are going to send you over the middle, throw you a ball a little high and let Rodney Harrison pop you without pads. If you ever wake up then you will know why they wear pads. There were times when players didnt wear face maskes and wore leather helmets, those guys got seriously messed up. Even if they didnt get injured right away, the long term effects on health was bad. There are reason rules are put in place, why cant players head slap anymore? Because it was dangerous and lead to injuries. Without pads it would be murder to allow guys like Ray Lewis, Brian Urlacher, and many other to level someone else.

Helmets of linemen often are different than the ones wore by QBs. Well not the helmets, per se, but the shoulder pads have a piece coming out to transfer the force of a blow onto the shoulder pads.
The QB needs to be able to more freely move his head. He is less armored and hence the rules saying you can't hit him in the head and stuff.
Oh, compare pro rugby players to pro football players. It is rare for a Rugby player to break 300 pounds. That is almost mandatory for an Offensive line to have a few 300 pounders. (Mostly muscle, not lardass.)

well of course here in Canada they will make hockey the best thing ever and they will diss other sports, especially ones they suck at. Hockey is a national sport so for a Canadian to say it's not a skillful sport is like swearing at their country, most people are into hockey for the lame fights anyway. football is the sport that's most demanding of skill and physical fitness, looking at other sports, basketball is easier the taller you are, football (american) is simply about size and nothing about technique and skill, anyone can master baseball for example, but football isn't for everyone. and i must mention, skating blades and pucks make hockey more dangerous, imagine someone trying to be acrobatic while playing hockey and hitting around something which is basically a circle and thick rock, you do the math.

Have you ever watched rugby, yeah its full contact but doesn't compare to football, I'm not trying to hate on rugby but the contact in football is different: all players are going to be roughly the same size, try and tell a 200 pound receiver your going to take away his pads and then send him across the middle and see how many catches he is going to make.

On the pro level it's to help protect multi million dollar players from injuries. The salary cap prevents talented replacements. After some deaths, especially in the early part of last century, they have been changing the rules to make things safer for the players.
On the school level it's to cut down on insurance claims which could quickly add up.
Even after all the gear, many stiff suffer from life long pains from arthritis and brain damage.

They have to wear pads because in the early days(before the NFL and when it was just college) there were too many DEATHS. The game was different back then and part of why they were pads now is because no one is willing to take the risk of seeing if it is safer now.
