It's not true. To my surprise most of the answerers have agreed to your point.
The fact is that man and woman are two different zones that unite to create a globe. In most of the asian cultures, these zones are more clearly defined. Also, they are not supposed to bother about the other zone. However the world seems to look at positve aspects of mens zone and negative aspects of womens zone. We we look at both of them with a wider perspective, we would find that both of them are equally important for the society.
Altough the boy carries the family's name, but the girl carries the family's respect. Although the boy is allowed to move out, but he is the one who is supposed to handle external affairs for the family. Although a girl is supposed to be at home, but she is the one who maintains the bindings and harmony of the family.
Talk about any such difference, and it has a reason. You can mail me through yahoo answers if you wanna know more.
All the best...

It's basically a cultural issue-it's not just "carry the family name". These societies gave a great deal more importance to the boys than to the girls.More privileges, more rights, more power, more freedom. Even marriage is a headache for the parents of the girl -because expenses hit the roof. In The West, women gained freedom because of Suffragettes movements and so on, but In Asia, they only have some freedom because Asians are imitating Western culture. This cannot change the mindsets of all the people-just a minority will change. On the outside they are modern, educated, but on the inside they still live by centuries-old values and traditions, not having the guts to live them openly.

In China. I couldn't tell you about any other place. It really sucks the Emperor and Empress had a male child born. If only they had kept the girl things could have changed for the better. But now I'm being heartless in this so I sort of regret this statement. Maybe if there lucky the kid won't want to be Emperor and will adbacate the throne to his older sister. I just know from what I've seen in the news that parents have to pay a fine for having a gal.
