How do you group smoking cigarettes in the same category as smoking crack and prostitution? You should really do some research before you start a rant that makes absolutely no sense.

Sometimes quitting smoking can put your body under a lot of stress and strain, especially if you are a regular "20 a day" smoker before pregnancy.

Some midwives will suggest cuting down rather than quitting completely when you find out you are pregnant, to avoid putting your body through that, which isn't good for the fetus either.

The fetus is most likely to be harmed by smoking in the first 8 weeks, a lot of women don't even know they are pregnant at this point! When you see a heavily pregnant woman smoking, I'm not saying it's good, but at this point, they are not really affecting the baby, which will already have a good size and weight.

I cut down from 20 a day to 4 a day... I know how non-smokers feel, but it's very hard! I know now I should never have started, but we all make mistakes!

32 weeks pregnant now, found out when I was 6 weeks and cut down straight away.

Baby apparently a good big size!

Cigarettes are bad for you in any instance, but women should REALLY make an attempt to try and quit when they're pregnant. I quit when I found out, so, it can't be that hard. I was a two-pack-a-day smoker.

Smoking crack or prostitution in ANY CASE is unacceptable. Women who do it while pregnant, though, really shouldn't be caring for kids. It's quite obvious that they can't even care for themselves.

I think most women know they are hurting their baby, and they do care. However, they are often unable to quit or consider satisfying their own needs and desires is necessary for their survival. Besides just being selfish, there is also a lot of rationalization that probably occurs, such as many people have done these things and the baby has been fine, or this is necessary for my wellbeing and without me being well my baby won't have a chance. In the end, who knows what they are really thinking, and we can't know what they have been through. We can only hope they make the correct decisions and that our children who will be facing similar choices are properly educated to make appropriate decisions when they are faced with tough matters.

A lot of doctor's now don't recommend quitting smoking when a women finds out she's pregnant, because of the stress it may cause on the mother. They mostly recommend to cut back on smoking, and quit if you are able. Smoking is highly addictive, and can be very stressful to quit. We shouldn't judge others, we can only do for ourselves what we believe is right.

They don't think it will affect the baby at all and it's hard for them to stop smoking especially if they're used to smoking a pack a day.

Well, first of all smoking is a very addictive habit and sometimes the stress of quitting is harder on your baby than actually smoking. Of course, I'm not condoning smoking during pregnancy, but unless you've been there, you'll never know what it's like. Plus, women have been smoking for hundreds of years during their pregnancies and we don't have a world full of deformed babies. My sister smoked quite heavily with her two girls and they were both fine. In fact, they rarely get sick. It all depends on how your body works. Smoking crack & selling your body are a bit extreme and really shouldn't be compared with smoking a cigarette. Let me also add that people who are going throw nasty comments out about smoking during pregnancy are either non-smokers or MEN!!

You are a 100% right. They don't know that they're hurting there baby and yet they don't know the damage their doing to their kid before he or she is even born. It's sad because the idiots are going to regert it for a long, long, long time. It's like creating a life and you don't care about that life that you made and you don't care what happens to your child. It's so wrong and curel like hell.

I know what you mean the day I found out I was pregnant I quit with both of mine. One of my friends is pregnant and she still smokes. Another girl I know is pregnant and she drinks and does drugs and has herpes, I feel so bad for that child.

BECAUSE THEY ARE LOSERS!!!!

'Nuff said!

***OKAY, I'LL EDIT: I understand it is an addictive habit that is hard to quit cold turkey and isn't healthy for baby if you do, BUT if you are having sex (unprotected) - then you already know that there is a chance for pregnancy!! And, if you decide to be a dummy and have that sex anyway - quit smoking------you know, just in case!! :o) At least the baby growing inside won't have to suffer!!!!!!!! And just because he comes out with 10 fingers and 10 toes doesn't mean he's perfect! The effects from a smoking mother goes far beyond which one can comprehend.....take for instance, vision trouble (glasses at an earlier age), or ADHD, or delayed developments when a toddler (some might just think they are slower than other toddlers but in reality it could have been all the smoke the poor baby inhaled while in utero).....shall I continue?*****
