I'm 23 weeks pregnant with swollen ankles and swollen fingers! Every morning (for the past week) I have a 12oz cup of Hot Chocolate. My blood pressure is low, no nausea, no headaches ... just water retention.
Is the retention caused from the hot chocolate???
(I don't have any other caffeine whatsoever through out the day)

Would walking (maybe 30 min. a day) reduce the swelling?
or make it worse?
(my ankles have a burning sensation).
I'm drinking all the water I can.

thanks!! :):):)

LOL! I have never been asked this in 22 years as a midwife - does hot chocolate cause water retention - that is precious!

Being pregnant in general usually means fluid retention to some degree - it's nothing you have to particularly eat or drink. In fact, caffeine is a diuretic - generally it will make you shed water not retain water, unless it is over consumed - like 10-12 cups of coffee a day. The odd cup here and there makes no difference.

Water retention in pregnancy isn't altogether a bad thing, relatively speaking. All women will do it, some more than others. Your body itself also produces more fluid during pregnancy. This extra fluid helps keep your body flexible, to accomodate the general expansion that is going on, and to prepare your body for labour and birth.

It sounds crazy but the best way to help with relief from fluid retention is to drink more fluid. If your body thinks it is dehydrating it will hang on to everything it can. Standing up or generally being on your feet for too long can trigger fluid retention, and so can over consuming foods high in salt, or over processed food.

Water retention and swelling are normal HOWEVER a sudden onset of swelling, or excessive swelling especially in your face and hands, can be a sign of pre-eclampsia (sometimes also called toxemia or pregnancy hypertension). If this happens to you then seek assistance from your caregivers without delay.

Good luck.

Your water retention could be because when you're pregnant your body chemistry changes so you need to watch your sodium intake and if you're having burning or any kind of weird changes see your doctor ASAP because that could be the indication of a problem. Anything funny you find during your pregnancy address it with your doctor so that something can be done so it doesnt affect your baby. The swelling is adema which means your kidneys are not eliminating fluids fast enough. See your doctor right away to get this stuff checked out.

I relly dont think hot chocolate would cause your water retainment. It didnt for me. Walking would only make swelling worse. Keep your feet proped up. Walk some but dont stay on your feet all the time.

Even though you are retaining water still drink lots of it!!!!

Best of luck!

Well as far as I know Hot Chocolate is naturally decaffeinated, so I do not think that is the cause of the problem

Perhaps to much salt in the diet?

Cut the salt out of our diet completely for a while and see if that helps. Prop your feet up whenever you can. You can also sleep with your feet propprd above your heart on pillows this may help also. Good luck
