I have a Compaq MV740 Monitor which I purchased 6 yrs ago. The problem is when I switch my display resolution from 800*600 to 1024*768, the screen comes faded. After 10 or 20 minutes it gets black leaving a colorful line in the middle. It runs fine in 800*600 but not in above it. What should I do? My computer vendor says its too old and I need a new one. What do you say???

Your monitor "IF" still in good condition should be able to handle up to 1280x1024. First I suggest to try to change the refresh rate to 85Hz for flicker free display. You can do this by doing the following:

1. Right Click on your desktop
2. Select Properties
3. Click on Settings tab
4. Click on Advanced
5. Click on Monitor
6. Change refresh rate to either 60, 75 or 85 Hz (Reccomended)

Note: Check if the brand of your monitor is showing on "Monitor Type" if it is using a generic brand then you may need a driver for your monitor to be recognized properly.

Good Luck!

No, it's not too old. That monitor is able to support up to 1280 x 1024 resolution.

There is a possibility that you have the 1024x768 resolution set to an odd refresh rate. Though, this particular monitor supports several different refresh rates.

Try setting the resolution to 1280 x 1024 and see if it gives you the same issue. Then try it on a different computer and make sure it is something with the monitor.

If it does the same thing on another computer, then the monitor is probably on it's way to monitor heaven. You should start saving up for an LCD monitor, which are not that expensive these days.

Sounds like your monitor is shot. It supports that resolution, but change the color depth (like maybe to 16-bit) and see if that helps. 6 years is along time, though. It may be time for a new one. Tube monitors lose color and brilliance over time.
