you probably need toi install addl codecs for your laptop to be able to read them. also you didn't specify whether you were referring to movies or data dvd's. If it's data that you're referring to... then there are different types of dvd drives and discs. Perhaps the discs that are not capable of working on yours are DVD-RAM's and you don't have a dvd-drive capable of reading those. (versus your friend's laptop which can)

The reason for this is because there are soo many different types of compressors that change the format of the video and for every different compressor there is something called "codecs" and you need a different "codec" for every type of video file..my suggestion to you is to try using widows media player to watch the DVD and be online when you do so..usually widows media will ask you if you want it to search for the proper codec to view the video file..and ofcourse you are going to say yes..if by some chance the video was done with some second generation software chances are windows media player will not find a codec for it.if that be the case i suggest you use software like windvd creator to change the dvd file to an AVI file ..good luck .and also there could just be a chance that the dvd is no good...i've bought boxes of blank dvd's where i had a few that were just junk..

Yeah, the Lasers in DVD drives are screwey, and some will read one kind of dye on the discs but not another, others will read exactly the opposite. I have three DVD burners, and sometimes a disc I burn will play in two but not three, sometimes only one, sometimes (mostly) all three. My only hint is to buy good blank media and burn at less than the maximum speed if possible. Maybe you could reburn the ones that won't play on your laptop to new media on another machine? If it would be worth the trouble, anyway.
