Yankees Overall plus they're hated because they're a good team.
But in a single season would be the Reds in 1975.
Johnny Bench (c), Tony Perez (1b), Joe Morgan (2b), Dave Concepcion (ss), Pete Rose (3b), Ken Griffey (rf), César Gerónimo (cf), and George Foster (lf). The starting pitchers included Don Gullett, Fred Norman, Gary Nolan, Jack Billingham, Pat Darcy, and Clay Kirby
Rawly Eastwick and Will McEnaney as the key closers with a combined 37 saves. Pedro Borbon and Clay Carroll

Just handed all those Yankee fans a big fat one, you just had to do it, didn't you because you're probably a Yankee fan too. Everyone will have a different viewpoint of course. And you can't really compare different eras. So all those saying the '27 Yankees are likely right for that era. The '75 Reds and Red Sox were also VERY good and in my humble opinion did play the greatest series ever (even if the wrong team won and Jim Rice was injured). The what was it '01, Mariners hold the record for wins in a season so take your pick.

Greatest Team (single-season)
I can't argue against the 1927 Yankees.

Greatest Organization (combining every year of the organization's existence)
To me, this is a 3-team debate among the Yankees, Dodgers (combining Brooklyn and Los Angeles), and Cardinals. Even though the Yankees are unquestionably the greatest American League team, the Dodgers and Cardinals were constantly battling each other for National League supremacy, and because of that power struggle, I can't consider the Yankees the greatest team. Even though my personal ties are closer to the Cardinals, I have to factor in the cross-country move of the Dodgers as well as the fact that it was the Dodgers who broke the major league color barrier once and for all. Below is how I would rank the 3 organizations.

3. Yankees
2. Cardinals
1. Dodgers

The 1961 New York Yankees. Featured Mickey Mantle (54 home runs) and Roger Maris (61 home runs), Whitey Ford (25-4) Cy Young and relief pitcher Luis Arroyo (15-5 with 29 saves) Fireman of the Year Award. The team hit a then record 240 home runs. Won 109 games and destroyed the Reds in the World Series.

This is not a matter of opinion... 26 world championships, 39 pennants... The New York Yankees are not only the greatest team in the history of baseball, but probably the greatest franchise in the history of professional sports.

Perhaps the 1939 New York Yankees. They went 106-45, scored 967 runs while giving up only 556. They were the only team to outscore the opposition by more than 400 runs. In addition they had 8 players with more than 200 total bases, 7 pitchers who had 10 or more wins. Their most well-known players: Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Lou Gehrig (although he retired early in the season), Red Rolfe, Charlie Keller, Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez.

I'm going against the grain, and saying the 1971 Orioles. Although they didn't win the World Series that year, they had won 100 games, had four 20 game winners(Palmer, McNally, Cuellar, Dobson), and despite the fact that they had no individual stat leaders, they won the AL by being the best team. Having 3 HOFers didn't hurt either.

1927 Yankees and any of the yankee teams when Gehrig and Ruth played in the world series with them. The Reds of 1975. When you have Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, and Tony Perez on your team all at once and decent pitching like Billingham, Gullett you have an all time great team.

Obviously, the Answer is the New York Yankees. Proof that Niccolo Machiavelli would have loved George Steinbrenner.
