Do you think it is right for there to be cuts for a cathlic grade school basketball team? There are enough players to make four teams, which is extremely difficult to handle. Do we have cuts? I mean this way we have an appropriate number of teams and kids will be playing the sports they are good at for highschool, or is this a time where it's just for fun and it wouldnt be right to make cuts.

I belive you have to make cuts to help out the kids. To give the kids the coaching and attention they need you can't have to many players. Two teams is what i would recommend. To give the kids that really want to play a real shot you can't have to many teams. The coach's attention and focus should be on the players and with 4 teams you can't really do that. I would have you recommend other basketball programs for the players that got cut, i know in my area there are at least 4 leagues they could join and tell them that if they work really hard then they could play next year. Another thing you can do for those players is to have an "open gym" where you invite the kids on the teams and others that want to make the team the next year and you can have some organized games, this helps the kids realize what they have to do to be at the level of playing and it will make them try harder, you can do these once or twice a month.
Hope that helps and good luck with the team

It might be appropriate if the school can not afford to sponsor extra teams. Plus you do want to have a chance to play not just sit on the bench. And the best players do not time to develop thus they playing time should not be cut. I know the feeling when I was in Cath grade school and they first added basketball I got cut and so did one of my friends - he cried at the cut session and I went home and didn't talk to my friends for a couple days. It hurt a lot but looking back I see the reason. In football we did not cut and it was no fun sitting the bench or being practice fodder the first year.

I am a High School Basketball coach. I can tell you that sports are becoming way to serious for young people. Many lessons can be learned through sports but the worst is that they can be rich from sports. Making cuts leads them to compare their abilities. This is when parents and kids start to think they can be rich someday. I say create your own school league with the 4 teams and teach teamwork and how everyone on the team plays a role in success.

That is the problem with America. Everyone is so afraid that our kids wont be able to overcome rejection or denial. This is BS. If the kid isnt good enough to be on the team, he shouldnt make it. Make him work harder in the off season and improve. Its what will make him/her achieve success later in life. They will develop work ethic. Not just handing him something because big brother says we should. This goes for every kid in every grade in every school. And there is no 'FUN' in sports. Not when adults get involved. And adults are the coaches. Its all pride.

Absolutely not, and I am a basketball coach myself. It's impossible to know in 4th-6th grade which kids are going to excel. It's all about exposure and early atheltic development at that point. I've coached teams with 20+ players before, its difficult but its way to early to weed people out. The last thing you want to do is cut the kid whose uncoordinated and ends up being 6'9".

It just teaches the kids to work harder. I got cut from my middle school basketball team and in high school I was one of the first players to come off of the bench.

The good news, there are other places to learn basketball. I'm guessing this is done purely on a resources base. There are not enough coaches that can devote their time and lives, there is not enough space to play all of them, and there might be a money issue on top of that.

Not the greatest idea to have cuts but it could be a financial decision....Good thing about basketball is kids can play it almost anywhere....Also, good time to teach your child about not giving up and practice makes perfect and if at first u dont succeed try try again....

Theres no cut in grade school period. You pay money to be on the team and get your uniform.
