my sister was watching the last two mintues of Primetime News and she said she saw his family crying and it looked like they were at ceremony of some sort and the announcer had said the mother lost her son to snowboarding.

I think the news report you're referring to was where a friend of his died...in a snowboarding accident that took his life...I'm trying to remember....
