words of wisdom to above answers. texas is not on the east coast. and it is spelled terrapins not teripins.

but the first answer is right. it is a turtle and they chose it because it is prominent in this area. i dont know about a "state reptile" as ive never heard of each state classifying a state reptile, but it is possible because they have state bird, flower, etc.

research it a little through google or wikipedia.com.........also, check maryland's official website and click on athletics and view the history or traditions. you will find what you need there

The terp name comes from the diamondback terrapin, a turtle commonly found along the east coast as far down as texas. It is also the state reptile for maryland, and maryland being a state school chose it as its mascot
