Any old text editor will do. Most book publishers are going to use their own programs to format your book, anyway.

http://www.openoffice.org is a program Suite compatible with MS Office, and includes Writer. I love this word processor. Its all free.

you can use wordpad wich comes already installed on your computer if you are running windows. excel, adobe, and word are also popular

if you want to share it use google's documents program. it allows you share,publish, and work with someone else. it also saves it as word documents (.doc)
