The best thing is to say nothing and let it go. Different people handle grief in different ways. Perhaps this woman was a very good friend of the widow, or a relative. Yes, she was out of bounds, but, as anyone who has been through the process can tell you, sometimes people say the oddest things at or after a funeral. I think it's because folks just don't know what to say, so they just say something, ANYthing, to fill that empty space, or, as in your case, take out their frustration on someone else.

I'll never forget how, after my mother's funeral, a childhood friend approached me to tell me about her husband's new job at the firm where my father had worked for years and wondered if my Dad could introduce him to the important clients and show him the ropes. I thought, "Pardon me... but this man's wife of 39.8 years just died.. and you want him to do WHAT?"

actually, that was quite impolite especially at the gravesite so i can understand her saying that to you. your intentions were not that bad but when people are in a state of grieving, nothing is really important at that moment. take that into consideration and feel free to apologize to the wife when you have a chance

You could have said, "I'm sorry, but I'm looking for the mother to extend my deepest sympathies to her as well"........
