eyeonthescreen has no idea what he's talking about. First hand experience with the Cal State system. Please. 2 of the three schools he listed aren't even Cal States. They're UCs. Davis and Santa Barbara are UCs. Only Hayward is a Cal State.
You really have to research each program to find out which Cal States are best in that area. In general, I'd have to say the Cal Polys (SLO and Pomona) are the most prestigious overall, but that's just personal opinion. You really need to consider each subject area to see if a Cal State is good there or not. You're honestly not going to get people to say a Cal State is "prestigious".

Chico was ranked 4th by US News & World report for their Master's program.
Northridge for engineering.

None of the CSU schools are highly rated. None are selective and none are prestigious.
If you want a prestigious public university in California, you have to go to a UC school. All of them are ranked and all of them are good. The most prestigious is UC-Berkeley, followed by UCLA, UCSD and UC-Davis (which is a UC school, not a CSU school).

CS Davis has one of the best veterinarian schools in the country. It also has an outstanding physics department.
CS Santa Barbara has one of the nicest campuses, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
CS Hayward has a good to excellent business school.
