If you want a no-kill solution (I'd be nervous using poison around small children), you can clean and disinfect the areas you see the mice. Then lay down Bounce dryer sheets - mice don't like the smell and avoid the areas once the sheets are down. If you don't catch the mice (we used no-kill traps and released the mice into a field near the house), you may end up just chasing them from room to room before they finally leave.

There are already some good suggestions here, but I just wanted to say, I have four cats (a couple of them are good mousers) and 3 dogs (one of them is quite adept at catching mice in an open field) and I still saw a mouse in my house the other day. A cat is no guarantee that you won't have mice.

Mice will not harm your children but can carry disease. Just make sure you keep your house clean, and you will be ok. As for getting rid of them, try getting some no kill traps and relocating the mice to a wooded area far from the house. If you can't get rid of them, you may have to call in a professional.

move to a new house right away!!! Your children are in serious danger! I mean SERIOUS! The type of mices you are describing are genneraly the kind that grow up to become child killers. Get out !~ quick. Leave right now. Don't forget to grab the baby formula before you go!

You can get electronic rodent repellents from your local DIY store. They are fairly cheap and you can put them in the rooms most affected. If you are in the UK, Argos also sell them. They are harmless to humans, and non-rodent pets, and work by giving out a high pitched sound that puts rodents off. I had to use them once in a flat, and they worked straight away. They also save the distress of having to clear away the dead animals for you and your children.
As for mice harming children, they don't, but they can spread diseases through their faeces, so you need to keep them in check.

you have 2 choices, get a cat who is a good mouser, or a snake, Mice will not come around with the scent of the snake.

Look out for electronic rodent deterrents. These seem to work better than poisons, etc. I'm not sure where to buy them but you could probably find them on line.

Get a ferret or find someone who does...they're great mice hunters and can get in smaller places.
