I had to take the day off on Monday to register my son for school. The following day I came in to work and my boss said that those things have to be done on my own time. I work form 9-6pm. They do not offer, time off and sick days. I know that many place do offer this is this against the law? Where on the Dept. of Labor website can I print info about about this kind of employee rights to time off? I mean I do have a life that I need to attend to.

Basically, I thin kit just depends on your company's policies. It is very cruel of your boss to not understand that you had to register your child in school. If you were fired for something like that you could probably fight and earn the right to be able to collect unemployment benefits.

If you are paid to work from 9-6, then you are obligated to work these hours.

If these hours are difficult for you, then it's not the fault of the employer.

Find another job. Or maybe your employer should sue you for not working the hours you agreed to.

It's actually up to company policy. We don't have that many federal laws to protect and give us sick and personal time off. I know --it's not right--but it's life.

depends on where you live. and the policies in place where you work.

generally, that would be an acceptable reason (especially if it's non paid time).

for the actual laws, it depends on the state

for federal, www.dol.gov
