There's no magical number of hours required by all kids in a certain age group. Two-year-old Sarah might sleep from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, whereas 2-year-old Johnny is just as alert the next day after sleeping from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Still, sleep is very important to a child's well-being. The link between a child's lack of sleep and his or her behavior isn't always obvious. When adults are tired, they can either be grumpy or have low energy, but kids can become hyper, disagreeable, and have extremes in behavior.
At 6 months, an infant may nap about 3 hours during the day and sleep about 11 hours at night. At this age, you can begin to change your response to an infant who awakens and cries during the night.
You can give babies at this age 5 minutes to settle down on their own and go back to sleep. If they don't, you can comfort them without picking them up (talk softly, rub their backs), then leave — unless they appear to be sick. Sick babies need to be picked up and comforted. If your baby doesn't seem sick and continues to cry, you can wait a little longer than 5 minutes
some of my opinion n from my wife................enjoy..............

Since my son was 3 1/2 mos. he's been sleeping from 10:30- 11:00 pm till 8 or 9am straight through, in his own crib. Don't ask me how I pulled this off, because I don't know! lol He was sleeping a lot during the day, too, but now he takes a nap around 10:30am, 1:30pm, 4pm, and 7pm (give or take 15mins) and they're usually 20-30 mins. His 7pm nap is usually at least an hour, though.. and he's right back to sleep for the night at 10:30 or 11. I didn't try to put him on a schedule, this is just how he is. No change for two months now..

since all babies are different, there is no pat answer that can fill the bill.
having said that, my boys slept for about 4 to 6 hour stretches during the night with naps during the day.
the daytime naps all varied in length according to what was going on that day. they would sleep like nobody's business during nap time when they were with Grandma. She was experienced and could really make the comfortable very quickly.
what they are eating also determines some of their sleep and waking cycle. Is the baby breast fed? Is the baby big and needs to eat frequently? is the house too quiet and the baby startles to the noise? (for this one, we used an old radio and set the station to the "white noise" between stations so that there was a sound in the room during naps.)
hope that helps.

My son just turned 6-mths. He sleeps from about 8pm to 7am, waking once for a 4oz. bottle (usually around 2 or 3). Naps aren't as consistent, but he usually takes a late morning and afternoon nap, each anywhere from 45min. to 2hrs.

All babies are different, but at that age my son slept from 7:30pm straight to 6am and took a nap after breakfast an another one after lunch, each around an hour long.
Hope this helps!
