is it a career change? if so say that its a career change and u want to gain experience in that area. at the end of the day someone is gettng free work out of you, and people aint gonna turn that down!
just be honest, say u are looking to improve your knowledge (in whatever area) and business practice and would appreciate the opportunity of an interview for a work placement (if they have and opportunities available.) you believe that you can never gain enough knowledge and you feel a work placement would make you more employable. and a placement with such a reputable company as the one you are applying to would be an excellent opportunity!....
good luck! u'll b fine.

I think the first question any potential employer will ask is why have you not had a job all these years. This is not a criticism on your part from me but you have to explain, for example, you've been the carer of a family member with a long-term illnes or you had kids very early and you've been looking after them...etc. whatever the reason is. If, let's say, you've been caring for somebody then you could say that you already have work experience in care work so you could go into that quite easily. If it's because (and I'm sure this is NOT the case) you've been doing nothing then it can be quite hard as potential employers may look at you as some sponge (and I'm sure you are not one!). So you need to look at what you've been doing now and realise that you've got experience at that. You could also enrol on a course in a field, e.g. childcare or something that you know you can do. Go to the Jobcentre and tell them about your situation, they'll be able to assess what is the right course of action for you.

What is the purpose? Are you trying to get into a graduate program, or are you just trying to get enough experience to get your "Dream Job"
Either way, there are a couple of ways to do it:
1. Temp: The temp agencies will place you in different situations that you would not otherwise be exposed to. You would likely be doing clerical work.
2. Start at the ground level. This is sometimes the best option, especially, in specialized fields. Apply to be a receptionist, mail clerk, or something at an equal level - you will be exposed to most of the company's business dealings, and you will be able to determine if it's truly what you want to "be when you grow up".
If you do opt for the later route, and decide that this is still your dream, be willing to go above and beyond, sometimes without the recognition you deserve. You will be assigned projects that may be above your pay-scale, but your will also be able to put it on your resume for future opportunities without the ability for your employers to dispute.

Ask a local charity if they need help , or hospital radio , home visits , what kind of experience do you need , it depends , if you need experience as a builder then my advice is no good but use some imagination regarding your needs then relate it to whats local. I prefer any charitable acts are local , I believe charity begins at home ( locale I mean). Keep trying , dont give up hope. :O)
