You need an associate degree atleast. This is a good way to start working in accounts payable.
With a BBA or 5 YR Accounting degree you can work in corporate in several positions.
Most states require 150 hours to sit for the CPA Exam. When you pass the CPA exam, doors will be opening up for you.
Also, going the college route, it is good to work part time in an accounting department.

At least a 4 year Accounting or Finance degree. And experience in an accounting department in a non-accountant position is very desirable.

You need to pass CPA, which is kind of like the Bar Exam for Lawyers, but the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is for Accountants. You do NOT have to have an Accounting undergraduate degree. One of my majors was Finance, and plenty of folks that had the same major as me went on to take the CPA. Passing the CPA is really the determining factor, the undergraduate degree really just prepares you to take the CPA.

In addition to the accounting degree, it will also really help to get CPA licensure. This tells employers (and customers) that you really know what you are doing, and can help to get past a lot of the fresh from college, and no prior experience issues.

You don't need a degree. You don't even have to have a CPA. It's just most people prefer someone who has the degree to "prove" your smarts.
