What is there to do and how is it like there? I have never been to Indonesia at all and I have not heard much about Pontianak. I am going there on a business trip next week and I do not know what to expect!!

Not much! Don't compare it with Jakarta. How long are you gonna be there? and when? I'll be there in April. It can be boring if you have to stay there for a long time. You can see the Dayak tribe culture. They are good with bead hand craft. Also you can see the remnants of Pontianak Sultan palace by the Kapuas River.

Generally speaking, Pontianak is quite safe. There are 3 major ethnic living there: Malay, Chinese and Dayak plus ethnics from other parts of Indonesia. They get along well though.

If you have more time, you can visit Singkawang about 2.5 hour drive from Pontianak. There you can see a small town with hundreds of chinese temples. The must see, there is the traditional ceramic factory. It has a unique method of heating the ceramic, a method brought from Mainland China but no longer exist there.

If you have time, you can also cross the border to Sarawak. It's cheap. It only takes about 8 hours to Kuching, Sarawak. There are a lot of stuff to see there too. Interesting small town of Malaysia.

I am from Singkawang, Indonesia. You can reach me at signum_fidei@yahoo.com for more info.

I been there also for business trip couples months ago, Don't worry just don't forget to bring water, and your medicines supply, BTW you can buy water over there (buy "Aqua" brand) and don't eat off the street. Good luck
