previous employers. Personnally leave references blank on my resume with a note 'references available upon request' because some places have specifications of who/what they want from you as a reference.

Names of persons who have known you over a period of time, say over five years. Usually persons like your past teachers, your pastor/priest/religious minister, military officers or any upstanding citizen in your community. But please ensure that these persons can attest to the GOOD side of your character because they might be called upon when a company wants to make a decision whether to hire you.
