Hiya
You have had a lot of answers for this question! Obviously a sensitive subject with most.
As one of the earlier respondants points out, new regulations came out last year that may be of interest to you. The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 (EEAR) means that an employer cannot adversley treat an employee because of their age. I.e. in your case, they cannot pay you less because you are younger or older than your colleagues. Equally, dont expect to be paid more just because you have worked there longer as that is also not allowed under the same regulations (well, not after 5 years service unless they are rewarding you for loyalty to the company).
There is also an issue here of equal pay - if you are being paid less than a male colleague or the same work.
Other respondants have had some good suggestions, by doing a pay survey on what other organisations pay.
If you genuinely felt that you were being paid less that your colleagues on the basis of age, then you can put in a grievance to your employer stating this. They would then have to investigate.
Good Luck

if u have the same level of qualifications, and u have been there longer then sorry but it does really suck! and i dont think there's anything u can do. i got into a big row with a past boss cus i had more responsibility than people who were older than me but got paid less... she put me up a pay bracket which is all she could do (worked for a big horrible company). just google it and check that there is no laws against age discrimination, i dont think there is yet though... or as other people say, start looking for a new job and make sure that u state ur reason for leaving!!

As another respondent has said you are getting more than the minimum wage for you age. Also it may not just be a matter of age but of qualifications - NVQ level 2 is not a high qualification maybe when you get the level 3 qualification your employer may pay you more.

Short answer: NO!
Long answer: You are a highly qualified individual, especially considering your age, and I would recommend either looking for work elsewhere, or at least threatening to. Remember, even if your first couple of attempts to move on could be unsuccessful, each time you try, your employer will have to make references for you, and this is a good method of getting them to pay attention of you. I would recommend doing this even if you'd rather stay put. You dont have to follow through any job applications, but showing you are in pursuit of something more than £5.61 will make them sit up!

Age discrimination (and it can go both ways) is a big no-no in the U.S.! You should talk to your employer in a mature and professional manner and find out why you are being paid so much less than your co-workers who have been there less time than you.
If this person will not pay you at least he same amount as your coworkers, I would recommend that you start looking for an employer who will. Don't quit your job until you know you have another one to back it up. Poverty is a lot worse than low pay! Good luck to you! Annie

Your income should be based on performance and length of service. NOT AGE! If the things you say are true, you should stop doing more work than everyone else until you get a raise better than theirs.
